As part of the company’s sustainability in the community initiative, ASDA Larne also played host to the council’s recycling education vehicle at the store in July, aiming to make the values of waste management accessible to all in a fun and informative way. Over the coming weeks, council attendants will hand out the free ‘bags for life’ to members of the public using the centre, meaning customers can now cut down on the amount of bags they use during their next shopping trip. Larne ASDA store manager, Geoff Murphy, said he is pleased to be joining up with the council on such an important issue and hopes the partnership will encourage more customers to think about the environment. “Sustainability and the environment is one of ASDA’s core values, and we are delighted to be partnering with Larne council to help inform our customers on the importance of recycling. Our new store in Larne is delivering a number of environmentally friendly initiatives within the design of the new store, which is a clear sign of ASDA’s overall commitment to the protection of the environment. “By donating our ‘bags for life’ to the council’s recycling centre, we hope this will encourage customers to reduce the amount of single trip bags they use and make them think more about the amount of bags they use for their shopping. “By hosting the education vehicle we are also giving our customers the opportunity to get advice and ideas on how best to reduce waste and recycle.” Barry Tapster from Larne council welcomed the involvement of Asda in the council's efforts to tackle the problem of waste. “The council is encouraged by the public response to all its environmental initiatives and particularly the numbers of people who have embraced the reduce, reuse, recycle message. “We are pleased to have the support of Asda in helping us push recycling rates even higher in the borough,” he said.
