A 27-year-old man from the Gobnascale area of the Waterside is in critical condition after a paramilitary style beating.
The attack happened at a house in Derryview Terrace just before midnight in Tuesday night.
It is understood the man tried to flee but the eight strong, baseball bat wielding gang caught up with him and meted out a vicious assault.
The identity of the young man is not yet known but it is believed he suffered a fractured skull, severe facial injuries and two broken legs in the incident.
The PSNI in Londonderry are appealing for anyone with information on the attack to contact them.
Sinn Fein representatives in Gobnascale, a nationalist district within the Waterside called the attack "brutal" and appealed for anyone with information on the incident to contact the police.
