NORTHERN Ireland's Tourist Board (NITB) have employed a novel means of promoting Londonderry as a tourist destination in the Republic of Ireland.
Segways, two wheeled self balancing vehicles, will take take to the streets of Dublin, promoting attractions such as the City Walls and the Tower Museum.
The innovative marketing campaign, one of the first to use the vehicles, will also use Bluetoot
h technology to promote the city.
NITB Destination Marketing Manager Ruth Burns said the campaign aimed to increase awareness about Northern Ireland's many attractions.
"In 2006 the Republic of Ireland received 3.7 million holiday visitors, and while Northern Ireland is getting a bigger share of these visitors, we could be attracting a lot more," she said.
"This gateway campaign will directly target international visitors already on the island and increase awareness of Northern Ireland as a place to go for a day trip or a short break while they are in Ireland.
"Northern Ireland offers a unique experience for visitors to the island of Ireland. From the world famous Giant's Causeway to the Walled City of Derry, we offer so many options for the tourist in a relatively compact geographic space."
NITB's gateway campaign will run from June to September targeting entry points such as Dublin and Cork airports, car hire companies and visitor attractions.
Meanwhile the Walls of Derry have been named in new tourist guide "1001 Historic Sites You Must See Before You Die" - the only attraction in Northern Ireland to make it into the publication.
The destinations were all chosen in collaboration with Unesco, a branch of the UN established to promote international collaboration.
Karen Houlahan of the Derry Visitor and Convention Bureau (DVCB) said the Walls of Derry were deserving of the recognition.
"We are the only completely walled city in Ireland and the feedback we have from tourists and tour operators about them is absolutely tremendous," she said.
"It's an absolutely prime location and a fantastic site for visitors and residents alike to explore."
