Waterside man describes earthquake ordeal
Londonderry teacher caught up in Chinese disaster
A WATERSIDE teacher, caught up in Monday's massive earthquake in China has described his experience as "terrfying".
Gavin McCloskey was forced to flee a 20-storey building in Chengdu, a city 60 kilometres from the epicentre of the quake.
He said: "When we got out, there was dust flying up from the building and we thought the building was going to collapse.
"We could feel the floor shaking under our feet, and at first we tried to get under a doorway, but as things got more scary we thought we'd better get out of here."
The Londonderry man also described how cracks were appearing in the walls of the building as he and his companions fled. At least 120,000 people are feared dead in the disaster with the death toll expected to take another steep increase.
"Our flats had a very high gate with spikes and it was locked, but people were desperately trying to get out over this gate, they were in such a panic," Mr McCloskey said.
