The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for part of the UK, as Storm Ellen is set to move in from the Atlantic, bringing strong winds with it. Storm Ellen contains the remnants of Tropical Storm Kyle, and will progress through parts of the UK on Wednesday 19 August. Met Office weather warnings The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for strong winds to Northern Ireland, south west Scotland, the Lothians, the Borders, Strathclyde, south west England, and Wales, which is in place from 8pm on Wednesday to 11.59pm on Thursday 20 August. “A spell of strong southerly winds are expected to develop on Wednesday night across southwest England and move north across western parts of Wales, southwest Scotland and all of Northern Ireland during the early hours of Thursday,” forecasts the Met Office. Gusts of 65 mph are possible inland, with 70 mph or more possible around coasts and hills. The Met Office adds, “Whilst winds may temporarily ease during Thursday morning, a band of heavy rain is likely to move east during Thursday afternoon and evening accompanied by some locally squally winds.” The Irish Weather service, Met Éireann, has named “Storm Ellen for disruptive and potentially damaging winds Wednesday evening (19 August) and throughout Thursday (20 August).” “Due to the combination of storm surge, spring tides and onshore winds there is a risk of some coastal flooding. There is a risk also of some inland and river flooding with some potentially heavy, thundery downpours,” Met Éireann added. Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Steve Ramsdale says, “Following the recent hot and thundery weather we are seeing a significant change to very unsettled conditions for August with an unseasonal spell of strong winds associated with low-pressure centres for the second half of the week.” Weather forecast for the whole of the UK Wednesday (19 Aug) will see rain, often heavy, affecting south west England and south Wales, moving north to reach southern Scotland and Northern Ireland by evening. There will be sunny spells either side of this, with a few showers in Scotland. However, it will become windy in the south west. On Wednesday evening, “Storm Ellen will bring some very strong winds to some western parts of the UK, with bands of rain moving north and east, followed by clear spells,” explains the Met Office. Thursday will be windy with risk of gales for some western parts at first. Rain will clear in the north and east, before sunny spells hit, but there will be further showers and then rain in the west later. There will be sunshine and blustery showers through Friday 21 August, with gales possible for exposed coasts. Over the weekend, winds will fall light and showers will become confined to central areas, with most places remaining dry.
