Burnfoot Primary School - the end of a learning era

BURNFOOT Primary School has closed as part of the amalgamation project involving the school together with Dungiven and Largy school which will see pupils start in a newly-built Drumrane Primary School in Burnfoot at the beginning of the autumn term.
Over the years a number of local primary schools closed, including Balteagh, Drumneechy and Dungiven with many of the pupils from these schools entered Burnfoot.
There has been a school in the Burnfoot since 1822 but the present school building dat
es from 1961 with a major extension taking place in 1976.
The first principal Mrs Irwin transferred from the old National School and served until 1966.
Mrs M.F.Carson became principal in 1966, following the retirement of Mrs Irwin and she continued until 1973 when Mr W.McIlwaine took over the post. He was principal until 1982 when Mrs V McCrea became head teacher. In 1998, Mrs Maureen Nutt, the present principal, took over as last principal in Burnfoot Primary School.
The current enrolment is 61 with four teachers, Mrs M.F.Nutt, Mrs S.Brown, Mrs L.Penn and Miss l.Nutt and secretary, Mrs M.Smyth, building supervisor/cleaner, Mrs N.McFarlane, classroom assistants: Mrs K.Blair, Mrs N.Cochrane, Mrs E.Hill, Mrs S.McMullan, Mrs C. Little, Mrs G.Young; lunch-time supervisors, Mrs Brown and Mrs T.Mullan and catering assistants: Ms S.Kane and Mrs M.Wilson.
