Employment policy tailored to meet Limavady's needs

LOCAL MLA Alderman George Robinson has been given assurances that the ongoing and flexible provision of vocational training throughout Northern Ireland is the aim of the Executive.
He asked the Employment and Learning Minister if he could "confirm that future vocational courses will be offered in direct response to the skills that are required to ensure that, at all times, there is a well-trained workforce in Northern Ireland,
with the skills that are required by employers and investors?"
The Minister in his reply stated that: "Key local employer feed information into the colleges about the needs of the local area and labour-market intelligence from local employers."
Mr Robinson said that this was a reassuring and positive statement that shows clearly how the Assembly is tackling the needs on a very local level.
He said: "In a recent meeting with the Western Health and Social Services Board they made clear how the Northern Regional College and Magee Campus University of Ulster were key parts of their recruitment strategy.
"This covered many types of employment sectors from secretarial, business, management, and of course the most important nursing and social services staff.
"It is only when a local understanding of the sills required to fill job vacancies, can the 3rd level education sector respond quickly to the needs and supply the suitably trained staff."
Sir Reg also noted the particular problems Limavady has been experiencing in the recent past.
He said: "The Member will know of recent difficulties in his constituency and that news is not always good. However, the aim of the policy is to do precisely as the Member suggests"
Mr Robinson said it was reassuring to know that Ministers are aware of the needs locally and that policies are in place to address those needs.
"I would urge anyone considering furthering their education, acquire new skills or seeking to retrain, no matter what age group they are in, to see what courses are available in our local colleges.
"Not only will this be of help them in seeking employment but ensure that we can sell Limavady to prospective investors in the knowledge that a well educated and traine
