LONDONDERRY'S favourite boxer John Duddy returns to the ring tomorrow night, in The Castle arena, Boston.
The middleweight fighter, who faces American Charlie Howe, admits he's still on track for a world title shot against Kelly Pavlik and his determined to bounce back after his poorly display in his last fight against Tunisian Walid Smichet.
"We all
get knocked back a bit but my last fight wasn't the tragedy it supposedly was," said the Galligh man.
"I've still 24 wins and no defeats. People who have never been in this position before have expectations not necessarily based on reality. It may not have been the prettiest (against Smichet) – it certainly wasn't – but the fact of the matter is I won.
"The critic's job is to look at things harshly. My job is to learn from my mistakes and move on. I was very disappointed in myself but I won the fight. I'm trying to improve myself as a fighter."
Thankfully for Duddy, Pavlik's manager Bob Arum admitted recently that he's still keeping a close eye on the Derry man and may get a chance at the world title, if he comes through tomorrow evenings bout unscathed.
"Now I've got this guy in Boston and I plan to do a job on him and show people that I have learned from the mistakes I made in the Smichet fight. If I can give a performance like I did against Howard Eastman in Belfast, I'll be pleased and if I'm happy, then everyone else should be.
"I'm looking forward to doing much better than I did in my last fight and I can guarantee that I will fight much better.
"I've been working hard to improve things. Hopefully tomorrow evening in Boston you'll see that improvement. In this business it's always about getting the win and that's what I did in my last fight and I'm still on course for a shot at the world title."
