THIS Friday promises to be a memorable date for the North West cricket fraternity and the Eglinton club in particular, as it hosts the first ever official Twenty/20 international match ever played by Ireland. The occasion is being used as a warm-up for the Irish squad in advance of their T20 World Qualifying tournament which will be held in Belfast at the start of August.
The starting time for Friday has been changed from 4.30pm to 5.30pm. This is to allow people to attend the funeral of Malahide stalwart John Wright who died yesterday (Tuesday).
The opposition at Eglinton on Friday will be the touring Bangladesh 'A'
side, who are one of the better 'A' teams on the world circuit, according to Ireland coach Phil Simmons.
"Their squad is packed with players who have played both Test and ODI cricket. It will be a difficult game for us, but one which we are very much looking forward to," said Simmons.
"It's clear that there is a great passion for the game in the North West and they play their cricket with great determination and plenty of skill.
"The game is these parts attracts great interest from both spectators and the media, and it promises to be a great occasion, with the crowd motivating the players."
On the composition of the squad Simmons said: "I'll be bringing the strongest possible squad I can, and it's vital we get T20 experience. The T20 World Cup qualifying series is from August 2-4 in Belfast, and if we win that we'll be taking on England at Lord's in the first game of the World Cup proper. There can be no greater incentive for a player than that."
The match has a 4.30pm starting time, specially arranged to accommodate those coming from work and looking for a perfect way to kick off the weekend.
Ireland will be fielding a full strength side as the countdown has begun to the lucrative qualifying tournament which carries £250,000 to the winner, along with a place in the World Championship of T20 to be held in England next summer.
With Simmons adamant that he needs to have his best eleven players in action and developing their T20 skills against stiff opposition as soon as possible, Friday provides the perfect opportunity to start that process.
There is free admission for children accompanied by paying spectators and organised school and youth parties are welcome to avail of generous deals.
The Eglinton clubhouse number is (028) 71810250 and match manager for the day is North West fixture secretary Robin Glenn, who can be reached at (028) 77763892.
